SENTIMENTAL TERROR
SENTIMENTAL TERROR
SENIOR THESIS - 2022
Inspired by a cemetery in Hingham Massachusetts, SENTIMENTAL TERROR explores classic frights. Creatures that lurk behind corners just out of sight, illusions that appear to good to be true, and shadows that distort reality.Â
How can these ideas be interpreted through clothing?
The collection was inspired by New England macabre artist Edward Gorey. I incorporated crosshatching to emphasize the body's natural shadows, echoing his distinctive illustration style. The patterns were hand-painted and then layered onto mesh using silkscreen techniques.
The prints and overall design were inspired by New England cemeteries and regional folklore. I used hand-carved stamps to create repetitive patterns, drawing directly from Puritan gravestone iconography.
How can clothing be distorted by the body? How can a garment not act the way it appears? These questions guided my exploration of volume and form, using unexpected materials like athletic mesh to create pieces that shift and transform with movement and perspective.
